Here’s some important information regarding our State Tournaments:
Regional Qualifiers:
As of 2025, we are not planning to hold Regional Qualifiers, because we have moved to an “Open State” format on the campus of the University of Central Florida in Orlando. However, if we cannot host the State Tournament on UCF’s campus, we will resume holding Regional Qualifying Tournaments. When held, our Regional Qualifiers are traditionally held the first Saturday in February each year. This event serves as a platform for students to compete and qualify for the Varsity State Tournament. Your Regional Director will be provide information regarding registration and the location of the tournament. The location of the tournament is at the Regional Director’s discretion.
Varsity State Tournament:
Beginning in 2025, FFL began hosting an “Open State Tournament.” By hosting on the UCF Campus, we eliminated the need for Regional Qualifiers. Schools may bring students to the Varsity State Tournament without having to go through a qualifier. The caveat is that schools must cover their judging obligations. The Varsity State Tournament usually takes place on the first weekend of March.
Novice State/Middle State Tournament:
In April, we hold the Novice State Tournament and Middle School State which are held simultaneously. The specific dates for these tournaments are dependent upon religious holidays and other factors.
Eligibility to Judge at Novice State & Middle School State Tournaments:
For the Novice State Tournament, juniors and seniors in high school with a minimum of 250 NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) points are eligible to serve as judges. Similarly, sophomores with 250 NSDA points can judge the Middle School State Tournament.
Expanding Competition Opportunities:
At FFL, we are constantly striving to provide additional competition opportunities for our participants. Currently, we are working towards offering a fall competition, which will further enhance the experience for our members.
